Bears Defeat Wolverines in Home Finale

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado posted a 22-12 victory in the home finale Saturday at Bank of Colorado Arena.
The Bears (9-5, 2-4 Big 12) jumped out to a fast start with bonus-point victories from No. 7 Stevo Poulin and No. 14 Dominick Serrano.
Leading 3-0 in the first round, Poulin put his squad up 6-0 with a pin over his opponent at the 1:50 mark. Serrano followed with a 12-4 major decision, expanding the gap to 10-0.
After a pair of decisions by Utah Valley cut the deficit to 10-6, No. 2 Vincent Zerban reestablished the 10-point cushion at the intermission with a pin just 19 seconds into the second round.
During the break, the wrestling team and coaching staff recognized Xavier Vasquez and Hudson Cropp during a senior night ceremony. The pair of seniors earned recognition for their contributions to the squad, the athletic department, the university and the Greeley community during their collegiate career.
Derek Matthews defeated his foe 5-2 in the first bout after the break, upping the Bears' advantage to 19-6. No. 32 Travis Mastrogiovanni widened the gap to 16 at 22-6 with a 4-2 victory.
Utah Valley picked up nine points with three decisions, including a pair of sudden victory wins in the final two bouts.
Andrew Donahue hung tough before falling 4-1 against No. 18 Jacob Armstrong.
Senior Xavier Vasquez dropped a heartbreaking clash with No. 16 Evan Bockman. After two sudden victory rounds, Bockman earned the triumph with two more seconds of riding time in the extra sessions than Vasquez.
Chase Trussell claimed an 11-8 sudden victory to close out the match.
