RAPID CITY, S.D. – Jaron Rillie fueled the Northern Colorado 78-69 victory over South Dakota State at Summit Arena Thursday.
"I could not be more thrilled with the win tonight," head coach Steve Smiley said. "We had a total team effort and played a great all-around game."
The graduate student from Sydney, Australia finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Isaiah Hawthorne led the Bears (3-1) with 21 points – his second career 20-point game – while Langston Reynolds tallied 16 points and Zach Bloch added 15.
"To beat a great South Dakota State team in front of nearly 5,000 fans, in a rabid environment, is a tremendous environment accomplishment," Smiley said. "I could not be prouder of our guys!"
UNC drained 8 of 21 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes, building a 43-33 gap at the intermission.
Zach Bloch buried a 3-pointer 44 seconds into the final half and pushed the margin to 11 at 46-35. The Bears maintained a double-digit lead until 20 seconds remaining in the contest.
