SACRAMENTO, Colo. – Gabi Placide registered a double-double and paced Northern Colorado (13-5, 4-1) to a five-set victory over (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 17-15) Sacramento State (11-7, 4-1) at The Nest Saturday.
"We knew the serve and pass battle would be important to this match and it was," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We were in control when we were serving well and in trouble when we were not.
UNC built a 2-0 lead but needed a fifth set to secure the victory after dropping the third and fourth games. Facing three match points, the Bears rattled off three straight to knot the fifth and deciding game at 14-all. Following a Hornets kill to push UNC to the brink once again, Maddie Davies, Annette Baker and Placide notched successive kills to secure the victory.
With the victory, the Bears moved into a three-way tie at the top of the Big Sky Conference standings with the Hornets and Idaho State.
Placide set career highs with 18 kills, 17 digs, seven blocks and added three service aces. Maddie Davies added 12 kills and four blocks, while Brynn Reines chipped in with 11 kills and four digs.
Syd Cole distributed 42 assists to six different Bears and registered four successful attacks on eight swings. He dropped in two aces and blocked two attacks.
UNC outhit the Hornets .367-233 in the first set and .276-.054 in game two to carry a 2-0 advantage into the intermission.
After the break, Sacramento State trimmed the margin to 2-1 by holding the Bears offense to a .095 hitting percentage. The Hornets evened the contest with their best offensive set of the tilt in game four.
Isabel Bennett netted six blocks and three kills, while Baker inked four. Alayna Tessena accounted for seven kills and three digs. Donning the libero jersey, Sam Steele's 26 digs helped the Bears set a season-high 82.
