BOULDER, Colo. – University of Northern Colorado swept Charlotte in the opening match of the Colorado Classic, hosted by Colorado at the CU Events Center Friday.
"We were very efficient out of the middle, did a great job of scoring and were pretty balanced," Head Coach Lyndsey Oates said. "I like those things but we still have some areas to clean up."
The Bears improved to 2-3 on the campaign, with the 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 result. Charlotte dropped to 3-1.
"I am pleased with the sweep," Oates said. " I thought our defense improved, even as the match went on, so that's a good step."
Syd Cole fueled the Bears' offense, setting up 36 of the 42 kills, distributing to eight different attackers.
In a back-and-forth opening game, which tallied 12 ties and two lead changes, Cece Huhn propelled UNC in front for good at 21-20. Huhn and Zoe Gibbs tallied a pair of kills each, accounting for four of the final points for the Bears to jump in front 1-0.
After six ties and four lead changes in the first twelve rallies, Cole dropped in a kill nudging UNC ahead in game two. The Bears built a lead of four before the 49ers trimmed the margin to one at 16-15. UNC responded after a timeout, outscoring Charlotte 9-4 to grab control of the match.
Annette Baker's second of back-to-back kills placed UNC ahead for good in game three 15-14, the fourth lead change of the set.
