PRs Fall and Jackson Sets Program Record on Third Day at WAC Champs

PHARR, Texas --Â The Northern Colorado swimming and diving team continued to perform well at the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday. On a day that saw numerous personal and season bests, junior Ali Jackson set a new UNC program record in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.42, just narrowly missing out on a podium finish. Additionally in the 200 free, Lily Mayer set a new personal best with time of 1:50.96 which ranks sixth at UNC.Â
Payten Irwin captured a podium finish for UNC, taking third in the 100 fly, posting a season-best time of 53.92. Katelyn Bergin finished a close fifth, also setting her best of the season with 54.09.
Bryanna Ungs took third place in the 100 breast for the second UNC podium of the day with a time of 1:01.98, marking her best time of the season. Additionally, Maria Erokhina, Emina Pasukan, and Sunna Svanlaug Vilhjalmsdottir all posted personal records in the 100 breast.
In the 100 back, Claire Timson broke her personal best with a time of 55.27 which now sits 5th in program history. Gracie Moreland also climbed into the program's top-10 times in the 100 back, finishing in 56.40.
In the 400 IM, all three Bears of Paula Nunez, Jana Hellenschmidt, and Natalie Kayfes set season best times, with Nunez leading the group with a time of 4:26.25 for a 6th-place finish.
The Bears closed out the third day of competition with a final podium finish, taking third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:40.22, as the Bears posted their fastest mark in the event this season.
With the final day of competition coming up, the Bears are in a tight race for third place, sitting with 316 points in fifth place, just 13 points shy of Utah Tech in third.
Saturday, Feb. 25, will feature the final six events of the championships: the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay. Finals for the events begin at 5:05 p.m. (MT).
