OREM, Utah -- No. 1-ranked Andrew Alirez continued his undefeated streak, defeating Utah Valley's Ty Smith in a 10-4 decision, while the Northern Colorado wrestling team narrowly fell to the Wolverines 22-20 on Friday night.
Alriez's win marks his 20th victory of the season at 141-pounds.
After an opening loss at 125, the Bears rebounded as Jace Koelzer earned a 6-2 decision before Alirez's win tied the team scoring at 6-6. Chris Sandoval kept the Bears rolling with a 8-6 win at 149 to put UNC in the driver's seat.
No. 28-ranked Vincent Zerben had no problem in his match, earning a 23-8 technical fall in the 157-pound match, and Baylor Fernandes pinned his opponent in 4:22 to give the Bears a commanding 20-6 lead.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines won the final four matches of the dual to squeak out the 22-20 win past the Bears.
UNC's Benji Alanis wrestled in an extra match at 149 pounds, earning a 5-3 victory over Utah Valley's Kainalu Estrella.
