UNC Mourns Loss of Thurman Wright

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Thurman Wright passed away on November 9. Wright was a student-athlete, coach, and professor at the University of Northern Colorado.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, December 2 in the Panorama Room at the University of Northern Colorado from 1 to 4 p.m.
A Richmond, Indiana native, Wright attended Colorado State Teacher's College, playing both basketball and baseball and graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1951.
Wright played on UNC's 1949 championship baseball and basketball teams. The baseball team won the District 7 championship among eight teams and was the first baseball team inducted into UNC's Athletic Hall of Fame. While coaching baseball at UNC, he led the team to an RMCC championship.
Upon graduation, Wright served his country and enlisted in the United States Army from 1951-1953.
In 1957, Wright earned his Master's and Professor of Education degrees from Indiana University. Wright started his career in Lamar, Colorado, and then back to his native Indiana where he worked for the Ossian, Indiana and Cambridge, Indiana school districts. He served as a basketball and baseball coach and taught science, social studies, physical education, and driver's education.
Wright then took his talents to Earlham College and coached basketball and baseball while teaching physical education. He then moved to Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota. Wright served as the basketball coach, assistant baseball and football coach, head trainer, and physical education teacher from 1964-1965.
Wright returned to his alma mater in 1965 where he was the baseball coach from 1968-1970 and the basketball coach from 1968-1983, professor of physical education, recreation and health, and teacher of driver's education. He retired as professor emeritus in 1986.
He married Margaret Robertson in 1952 and they were married for 59 years until her passing in 2011. They raised three children in Greeley, Mark, Pamela, and Lisa. Thurman was extremely passionate when it came to basketball, baseball, and the University of Northern Colorado athletics.
