Northern Colorado Places Sixth at Mark Simpson CU Invitational

ERIE, Colo. – The University of Northern Colorado men's golf team placed sixth out of 17 teams at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational – hosted by Colorado – at Colorado National Golf Club (par 72/7,787 yards) Monday and Tuesday.
In just his third collegiate tournament, Antti Vahvaselka placed 11th out of 100 participants, the top performance among the 23 rookies in the field. He opened the event with a 4-under par 68, highlighted by six birdies in the morning session Monday. Vahvaselka added three more birdies in the second round, posting a 73, before shooting a 1-under par 71 Tuesday.
Northern Colorado tallied an even-par 285+286+293=864 as a team, posting red numbers in each of the first two rounds. The Bears bested Nevada for seventh by one shot and Wyoming in eighth by two strokes. They trailed Washington State for fifth by five shots.
TJ Shehee went 1-over par in the three rounds, opening with a 73, before closing with a 72 in back-to-back rounds, ranking 29th.
Pietro Boeris equaled Shehee with a 71+72+74=217. Gage Messingham closed with a 77 Tuesday, after posting a 2-under par through 36 holes, posting a 73 and 69 Monday.
Peter Grossenbacher rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a 234 (82+76+76).
Competing as an individual, Blake Danni went 78+77+77=234.

Northern Colorado concludes the fall portion of its schedule at the Little Rock Invitational – hosted by Arkansas at Little Rock – at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas, Oct. 16-17.
