Chitkoksoong leads Bears after first round of Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo.—Highlighted by a 2-under on the back 9, Amy Chitkoksoong led the Northern Colorado women's golf team on the opening day of action at the Golf Week Red Sky Classic on Monday.
Chitkoksoong finished the first 18 of the 54-hole tournament with a 1-over 73 to share 27th place on the leaderboard. Chitkoksoong noted four birdies on the day, including a birdie 421-yard par 4 on the 16th hole.
A single shot up on a pair of challengers, Pepperdine's Lauren Gomez paced the field with a 5-under 67 for the 6,367-yard course at the Red Sky Golf Club.
As a team, UNC holds the No. 18 position with an 18-over 306 and rests two strokes shy of fellow Big Sky foe Idaho (304). A third Big Sky opponent, the University of Northern Arizona, ended the day in 13th place with a 295. No. 25-ranked Pepperdine leads te\he team title chase with a 285.
Using 1-overs on both sides of the course, Marija Jucmane finished as UNC's No. 2 scorer with a 74. The Bears third spot belonged to Louise Dahl, who fired three straight birdies to close out the round for a 76.
"It was a tale of two '9s' today. If we just eliminate the mental mistakes, we will be in a good position to bounce back and move up the leaderboard tomorrow," UNC Director of Golf Clayton Sikorski said. "This is the first round this year where those mistakes have really impacted our score. I trust the fight in this team and know we have two good days ahead of us."
