Shockers Stall UNC Rallies in Omaha
9/2/2022 6:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
OMAHA, Neb.—Dug into early deficits in each set, the Northern Colorado volleyball team dropped its first match of the season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) setback against Wichita State on Friday.
Northern Colorado (3-1) will close out its swing in the Cornhusker State on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against the host Mavericks of Omaha.
The Bears quickly fell behind 7-1 in the opener but powered by a trio of Makenzie Harris kills, the Bears used a 9-2 run to stake its first lead 10-9. Wichita State (3-2), however, countered with a nine-point string en route to the win.
UNC trailed 3-1 early in the second but managed to even the set on six separate spots. Down 18-17, Harris provided the swing for the latest tie in the set before the Shockers held off the rally.
Looking bleak after an 8-1 shortfall in the third, Kailey Jo Ince took over with three straight kills to help the Bears close the gap to 16-15, but the momentum stalled as the WSU offense hummed along in the waning moments to secure the clinching set.
Ince had six kills in the third set alone while topping the bears with 10 terminations in the match. Harris followed with nine kills while Isabel Bennett added six.
The Bears will close out play in Nebraska by playing the host Mavericks of Omaha on Saturday. First serve is set for 3 p.m. inside the Baxter Arena
BACK IN THE BANK
