Velasquez Leads Bears at First Round of Thunderbirds Invite

UNC sits in ninth after the first round
ST. GEORGE, Utah – After a long winters break Northern Colorado women's golf returned to the course on Thursday for the first round of the Lady Thunderbirds Invite at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah. The Bears had a strong first round shooting a 29-over, 317.
Camila Velasquez led the charge for the team shooting an even par 72. Teeing off on the back nine, she shot a 1-under 35 to start her day with three birdies in her first five holes. She added in two more in her second nine. Velasquez sits in a tie for third, two strokes off the lead.
Three other UNC golfers sit in the top 50 in Maria Vallejo, Jenna Chun and Sloane Post. Vallejo is competing as an individual and tied for 35th with an opening day 79. Chun is a stroke behind her in a tie for 41st and Post, two strokes back tied for 47th.
As a team, UNC is three strokes behind a two-way tie for seventh and five back of cracking the top 5.
