GREELEY, Colo.— Steve Smiley and the Northern Colorado Men's Basketball staff add to an already solid roster with the addition of transfer student Mekhi Cameron on Wednesday.
Cameron, a 6'3" sophomore wing, makes his way to Greeley from Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas. In his freshman season at Cowley, Cameron averaged 12.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. A long-range threat, he averaged 40 percent from 3-point range and was 75 percent from the free throw line.
"We're thrilled to add Mekhi Cameron to our recruiting class and to have him join our roster for the 2023-24 season," UNC Head Coach Steve Smiley said. "Mekhi is a player that we've had on our radar for a couple of years now, and we feel like he is a perfect fit for us both on the court and as a student-athlete that will represent our program off the court as well."
So far in his sophomore season, Cameron has had a strong showing, putting up 26 points against Redlands College and sinking 5 of 10 from 3-point range. As a freshman, Cameron scored a career high 29 points against Northeast Oklahoma, where he went 6 of 8 from distance.
"Mekhi is a big guard that can really shoot it in both stationary and moving/screening actions, and he's also developed tremendously already as a creator on the ball and will continue to improve as we get him on campus in the future. He also has a great presence on defense, and his size and athleticism will be huge assets for how we want to defend," Smiley said. "He's been really coached well at one of the top junior colleges in the country, Cowley College for the past two years and he comes from a family with a track record of elite athletic success. I know that all of Bear Country will be really excited to watch Mekhi for the next two seasons!"
The Atlanta, Georgia native also brings accolades from his career at Eagles Landing Christian Academy, where he earned First Team All-State honors and initially signed at Morehouse College before finding his way to Crowley College.
Cowley College Head Coach Donnie Jackson said, "Mekhi is an everyday guy. He puts his hard hat on and gets to work daily. Since he has gotten on campus at Cowley, there has not been one person who spends more time on his game. He's been an absolute joy to coach. Khi is a genuinely great kid who will fit well at UNC."
"Northern Colorado did the absolute best job recruiting Mekhi. They identified him early, they put the work in, and they got it done. Big shout out to a Coach Cory and Coach Smiley for the way they attacked recruiting Mekhi and making him feel that this decision was a no brainer based off the family environment and playing style that is cultivated at UNC."
