Bears show grit at #3 Houston

HOUSTON—Facing a national title contender on their home court, Northern Colorado used energetic defense to stay within striking distance in the first half before falling to No. 3-ranked Houston, 83-36, on Monday.
Northern Colorado (0-1) held the Cougars to 33.3 shooting in the first half but struggled offensively against the returning Elite 8 program with only 13 points in the first 20 minutes of play.
Riley Abercrombie, Matt Johnson II, and Caleb Shaw each scored eight points to share the scoring lead for the Bears, who shot 26 percent overall from the floor and 24 percent from 3-point territory.
Marcus Sasser, a preseason All-American for Houston, scored 11 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 21.
Northern Colorado, picked to finish second in the Big Sky Conference, will return home to host Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, Nov. 11. Opening tip inside the Bank of Colorado Arena is set for 6 p.m.
