Byrne leads Bears past Grizzlies
11/26/2022 4:39:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Facing an inspired Adams State team, Northern Colorado (4-2) trailed by as many as nine points late in the third quarter but ramped up its defensive effort to hold the Grizzles to three field goals over the last 10 minutes of play to nearly reverse the deficit.
Adams State shot just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the floor as UNC outscored Adams State 20-9 in the final quarter for the six-point win.
Byrne not only topped her previous season high but matched her collegiate best effort which she achieved during the 2020-21 season while playing at UNLV.
Boosted by a 5-of-5 exchange at the free throw line, Hannah Simental added 15 points and provided one of the key moments in the contest with a make on a fouled 3-point shot at the 3:00 mark in the final period. Simental converted the free throw for the 4-point play and expanding UNC's advantage to 62-55 at the time.
Reaching double figures in scoring for the third time in six games, Averee Kleinhans scored 12 points to aid the winning effort.
The Bears will return to action on Nov. 29 when they host Colorado State University. Opening jump against the Rams is set for 6 p.m. inside the Bank of Colorado Arena.
