Last-second winner spins out for Bears
11/22/2022 8:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Knecht led Northern Colorado (1-4) with 21 points while Johnson II finished one point back, but cold shooting from beyond the 3-point line allowed Colorado Christian to generate as much as a 11-point lead midway through the second half.
Down 55-44, the Bears stormed back with 3-point makes by Johnson II and Caleb Shaw while a pair of conversions at the free throw line by Theo Hughes gave UNC its first led since the early moments of the contest.
The Cougars kept the game close and gained a 68-66 edge with 37 seconds remaining thanks to free throws by Jason Gallant.
With 18 seconds to play, the lead exchanged hands yet again at the charity stripe as Knecht successfully stepped up for a trio of attempts after drawing a foul on an attempt from beyond the arc. After seeing the home side convert all three attempts, CCU managed a layup to swing the score the other way with only five seconds on the clock. Sprinting down the court, UNC's last-second attempt for the win bounced off the rim as time expired.
UNC will return to action at the Lobo Classic on Nov. 25-27. The Bears will face North Dakota State, Jacksonville State, and the host from New Mexico over the three-game set.
