Castiglia shines in California

VALENCIA, Calif.—Climbing the leaderboard in each round of play, Northern Colorado's Jack Castiglia tied for sixth place at the Bill Cullum Invitational this week.
In 21st place through the first round of play, Castiglia (72-70-71—213) shot up the charts to seventh with a 2-under 70 in the middle round before another sub-par round, this time a 71 in the finale, moved the graduate student up an additional place.
As a team Northern Colorado (295-293-289—877) placed eighth overall but concluded the 54-hole event just two strokes shy of sixth.
Posting improved rounds at every turn at The Oaks Club, the Bears finished one shot shy of Weber State (289-293-294—876) and two swings from Utah State (289-293-294—876).
The host fivesome from CSU Northridge (283-280-289—852) earned the team title by a single stroke over Cal Baptist (287-290-26—853).
Boosted by a 3-under in Monday's early round, Yuze Zhang (69-77-71—217) tied for 17th place to give UNC a pair of individuals inside the top 20.
Garrett Willis (75-74-76—225) finished as UNC's No. 3 on the leaderboard while Alessio Battista (79-73-74—226) and Blake Danni's (81-76-73—230) overcame slow starts to post counting scores towards the team total in the final round.
CSU Northridge's Felix Schrott (70-68-72—210) and UC Irvine's Darien Zhao (68-70-72—210) shared top low score of the tourney with 6-under 210s.
The Bears will conclude their fall schedule on Oct. 17-19 when they travel to compete a the TPC Colorado Invitational, hosted by the University of Denver.
