Simental shines in 4th, Bears back to winning ways
1/27/2022 1:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OGDEN, Utah – A second consecutive monster fourth-quarter performance, this time from Hannah Simental, gave Northern Colorado the firepower it needed to knock off Weber State, 65-55.
A methodical start to the game gave the Bears open looks, an opportunity UNC didn't waste. Both Simental and Micayla Isenbart found the bottom of the net from long-range. In fact, three straight triples gave head coach Kristen Mattio's crew the early lead.
On the defensive end of the floor, Northern Colorado was just as stout.
UNC held Weber State to just 3-12 shooting, including 1-5 from downtown. While the home Wildcats marginally improved their marks in the second quarter, the Bears still took a five-point lead, 26-21, into the locker room.
Harden came out firing in the third quarter. Back-to-back buckets quickly gave the Bears a bit of breathing room.
The junior from Denton, Texas nailed two triples to make sure UNC had a seven-point advantage for the final ten minutes.
Northern Colorado seems to be making a habit out of takeover performances in the fourth quarter. Thursday was Hannah Simental's turn.
After scoring five points through the first three quarters, Simental went on a tear, pouring in 15 points.
A 12-0 run from the Wildcats had given them the lead but eight straight from Simental helped UNC leapfrog WSU with 3:31 to play and the Bears never looked back.
When the dust settled, the 65-55 victory earned Mattio's crew its second road win of the season and second conference victory as well.
Stat of the Game
Eleven offensive rebounds from the Bears led to 13 second-chance points. Northern Colorado outscored Weber State, 13-4, in the category.
What They Said
Head Coach, Kristen Mattio
"An aggressive start defensively and aggressive finish allowed us to come out victorious. I thought Micayla's early 3's helped set the tone for the game from the offensive end. She was locked in! We knew that controlling the boards would be vital to our success today as Weber is a strong rebounding team. Hannah and Kurstyn down the stretch were fantastic. This was our fifth game in 10 days and these ladies continue to leave it all on the court! I am very proud of them!"
Game Notes
Northern Colorado stays on the road, traveling to Idaho State on Saturday. UNC will return to Bank of Colorado Arena on February 5, against Northern Arizona. Tickets can be purchased at UNCBears.com/Tickets.

Kurstyn Harden also flexed her muscles in the opening half. While she didn't pile up a plethora of points in a quarter as she did on Monday against the Hornets, eight first-half points established her presence down low.Q1 | Splash one in for @micaylann!!
