OGDEN, Utah – New Year, different team, same result.
A 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21) victory propelled Northern Colorado into the championship match for the third time in three year.
Northern Colorado played from behind for most of set No. 1.
Laura Katarzynski tried to change all that from the service line. A pair of aces and a number of serves that put Portland State out of system lifted the Bears to an 8-0 run that put UNC in the lead.
Even though the Vikings closed the set on a 3-0 run themselves, the momentum shifted towards the Bears with the late run and it carried into the next set.
Katarzynski wasn't missing from the line in the second. Three consecutive aces had the Northern Colorado fans in Ogden roaring. The Winfield, Illinois native finished with six on the evening, tying Northern Colorado's single-match record.
Defensively, UNC held the Vikings to just .067 hitting in the second stanza, limiting anything and everything.
Makenzie Harris and Lauren Strain put down ball after ball from the outside and middle and all of the sudden, the match was tied at one.
The aggressive serving didn't stop in the third. Michaela Boon and Kyndall Feather got in on the action as UNC's offense began to fire on all cylinders.
Syd Cole and the offense orchestrated a .407 hitting performance that gave the Bears a coveted two-set advantage.
Northern Colorado kept the pedal to the metal in the fourth. Hitting an even .500, the Bears withstood a pair of runs from the Vikings, ultimately rattling off a 4-0 run themselves late in the set to get some breathing room.
Kailey Jo Ince dealt the final blow, sending UNC to the championship match for the third time in the last three years.
