GREELEY, Colo. – For only the second time this season, Northern Colorado Swim and Dive are back in the pool. Saturday, the Bears play hosts to the Pioneers of Denver for dual slated for 5 p.m. MT.
UNC is coming off its best performance of the season at Air Force. During the two-day quad-dual meet, the Bears swept all six matchups leading to Northern Colorado's first appearance in College Swimming's Mid-Major rankings at No. 22.
Anna Austin's junior campaign continues to trend in the right direction. The Colorado native won four events at the Natatorium, including all three long-distance swims as well as the 200 fly.
Equaling Austin's effort, Madelyn Moore speed in the sprints turned heads and earned her the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week. Her opening split in the 200 free relay was just .01 off an NCAA 'B' cut time.
Though UNC has frequented the Pioneers' annually Denver Relays, the two programs haven't gone toe-to-toe in a dual since January of 2009.
Saturday also marks the final time Stephanie Tymoszuk and Petra Kis will suit up in competition at Butler-Hancock Pool.
A native of Broomfield, Colorado, Stephanie has been an integral part of the Swim and Dive program since arriving on campus. A staple in the sprints, she has consistently given the Bears strong performances in the pool. Last season, Stephanie placed in the top 10 in both the 50 and 100 free in nearly every meet. This year, Tymoszuk was part of the squad that delivered a historic performance at the Air Force Quad Dual in Colorado Spring. Across two days, the Bears swept all six duals.
Out of the pool and in the classroom, Stephanie has embodied the very meaning of student-athlete. An Academic All-WAC team member, her diligent studies helped the team to a team GPA of 3.83 last semester which ranked number one in the Western Athletic Conference and tied for second in the nation.
Petra's provided almost instant impact for the Bears since her first meet at UNC. As a freshman, the Hungarian re-wrote the record book, setting new marks in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 Free, rightfully earning WAC Freshmen of the year honors and helping the Bears to a third-place finish at the conference championships. Throughout her tenure in Greeley, Kis kept raising the bar. Entering her senior campaign, Petra is the two-time WAC defending champion in the 400 IM and she's swam multiple NIC qualifying times. In total, Petra has collected program records in the 200 and 400 IM and swam the opening leg of the 800 free relay at the WAC Championships, smashing the school record with a time of 7:24.72.
With all her work in the pool, Petra also managed to raise the bar academically, landing on the Academic All-WAC team along with Stephanie.
