UNC's student-athletes posted a department best 3.42 GPA during the spring semester
The ink has dried, and grades are in for the 2020 spring semester. The Northern Colorado Athletic Department had a record-setting semester! The Bears put together a department-wide 3.42 GPA raising the cumulative GPA to 3.25. It is the 15th straight semester the department has a 3.00 GPA or better.
"This would have been a remarkable performance under normal circumstances, let alone for a semester where student-athletes faced unprecedented circumstances," Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said. "And despite it all, our student-athletes delivered!"
Twelve sports earned the highest team semester GPA in the history of the program with women's tennis leading the way with a 3.82. Golf led the male sports with a 3.78. Forty-one percent of the department's student-athletes had a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher, including 76 (17.8 percent) recording a perfect 4.0.
"I am so proud of the integrity, accountability, and excellence they exemplified this semester. In addition, I must thank our academic staff and coaches for their hard work supporting our student-athletes," Dunn added. "Lastly, I am grateful for our faculty who also had to embrace the challenges of remote learning and delivering a first-class experience, guiding UNC student-athletes towards becoming champions for life."
Overall, cumulatively speaking, 136 student-athletes hold a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 17 have a 4.0.
The strong semester will help the department stay atop the Big Sky in both Graduate Success Ratings (GSR) and Academic Progress Rates (APR), both tools used by the NCAA to track the department's academic standing.
UNC led the Big Sky in GSR for the third straight year in 2019 with a rate of 88 percent. The Bears had three programs earn perfect APR ratings announced by the NCAA in May in men's and women's cross country and women's golf. That tied for the most in the Big Sky.
