GREELEY, Colo – University of Northern Colorado Athletics and its official medical partner, Banner Medical Group have developed a comprehensive plan for the phased return of student-athletes to athletic facilities for voluntary in-person individual workouts to begin on Monday, June 15.
The phased approach allows the safest accommodation of small groups of student-athletes to have access to training facilities for in-person voluntary workouts and follows all State of Colorado, Weld County and NCAA Division I Council guidelines.
"We have been working closely with our great partners, Banner Medical Group, our university administration, local and state officials to develop a plan that places the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes and department personal at the forefront," said Darren Dunn, Director of Athletics. "I am proud of the work this group, led by our Director of Sports Medicine Tracy Damrell, has done that will allow our student-athletes the opportunity to return to the athletic facilities. We are excited to welcome our student-athletes back."
With Damrell and Dr. Steven Sides of the Banner Medical Group heading the efforts of the collaborated group, the following are some of the key guidelines that will be in place:
"Like everyone else, we're trying to navigate this pandemic and allow our student-athletes to start the process of returning to some activity safely."
The first phase of returning student-athletes to the athletic facilities will be the fall sports (football, soccer, volleyball).
With the success of the first phase, it will lead to subsequent phases and a greater number of student-athletes being welcomed back to campus in the safest possible manner. Current plans have the winter and spring sports to return in early July.
