Northern Colorado men's basketball welcomes Colorado transfer Daylen Kountz
Northern Colorado men's basketball welcomed Daylen Kountz to the program on Monday. Kountz comes to UNC from the University of Colorado where he played for two seasons. The former USA TODAY Mr. Colorado Basketball graduated from Denver East High School.
"Securing the commitment of Daylen Kountz is a big deal for our program right away and also for where we want to go in the future. Daylen is an extremely talented player that has the versatility to play multiple positions in our system. He's proven himself for the past two years on winning teams at Colorado in one of the top leagues in the country, the Pac 12," head coach Steve Smiley said. "His athleticism, ability to create and finish at the rim, and ability to knock down tough shots are all things that we identified as areas of improvement for our current roster. Daylen will also fit in well with our current roster both on and off the floor and he will continue to help us build upon our culture. We're glad to keep another talented in-state talent at home, and our entire staff and program is looking forward to working with Daylen soon."
Kountz was one of the first guards off the bench in both his freshman and sophomore season. He averaged 5.6 points as a freshman and 3.0 as a sophomore. During CU's NIT run in 2018-19, he increased his scoring averaged to 8.3 points a game.
A 2018 graduate of Denver East High School, Kountz averaged 23.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals as a senior. He led Colorado's largest classification in scoring as a senior, helping the Angels to a 21-4 record and a spot in the Class 5A Sweet 16. Kountz was an All-Colorado selection by the Denver Post and the USA Today's Colorado State Player of the Year.
He took MVP honors at the Nebraska Prep Classic and the Tarkanian Classic. Named the 2018 Denver Public Schools Player of the Year, Kountz was a two-time all-state selection and earned honorable mention as a sophomore. He helped Denver East to an 18-8 record and a spot in the Class 5A Great 8 his junior season. He averaged 24.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals in his prep career.
Kountz played AAU basketball for the Colorado Hawks with a pair of his current teammates Sam Masten and Bodie Hume.
The son of Daryl Kountz and Tameka Robinson Kountz, both his parents played college basketball. His dad at Penn Valley College and mom at Brown Mackie College. Going into his college career he was also recruited by Colorado State, Nebraska, Wichita State and Wyoming.
Kountz has two years of eligibility left and will have to sit out the 2020-21 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
