UNC football starts spring practice Tuesday
The new look UNC football team hits the field for the first time under head coach Ed McCaffrey Tuesday night to begin their spring practice. The Bears will practice under the lights of the Butler-Hancock Athletic Fields. It will be the first time McCaffrey and his coaching staff get to work with the Bears players on the field after they completed a competitive winter conditioning period. Here are a few things to look for during spring practice.
Establishing a Culture
The new staff will continue to lay down its roots into what the UNC football program will be moving forward. Look for the team to get back to the basics establishing good habits and routines for every play. Style of play will not be the only way of establishing the culture, but also how the team carries themselves on and off the field.
Who's QB1?
For the first time in what feels like a decade, there will be a new QB1 for the Bears. Jacob Knipp has moved on after graduating to pursue a career in the NFL leaving a big question mark on the team's depth chart. Conner Martin returns with the only experience out of all the returns while Zach Rush and Alec Lewis redshirted in 2019. The Bears also welcome in JUCO transfer and the 2018 Oregon Gatorade High School Player of the Year Nate Overholt to the team.
Defensive Growth
Northern Colorado returns a lot of experience from last season's team on the defense looking to take the next step forward. Look for players Jerone Jackson, Eddie Gonzales III and Brooks Talkington improve their play and production under new Defensive Coordinator Scott Darnell.
