Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Just Short
12/28/2019 7:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball
UNC men's basketball fell to Portland State 69-65
PORTLAND – Northern Colorado battled back from down as much as 22 against Portland State on Saturday afternoon to within one multiple times, but the comeback fell short 69-65. The Bears fall to 7-5 on the year and 0-1 in the Big Sky.
Bodie Hume led the charge for UNC with 22 points, including making four of the team's five 3-pointers.
Hume had a pair of 3s during the end of the half run including a buzzer-beater to cap it off. He scored 11 of his 22 points in the first.
What They Said
Head Coach Jeff Linder
Overall thoughts
"When you are on the road it's going to be tough. Then you play a team that plays differently than anyone you have seen all year it is tough. They tried to speed us up and they did that to a couple of our guys. In that early stretch of the first ten to twelve minutes where we dug ourselves the hole and went down by twenty-two. Give our guys credit for scratching and clawing throughout the game and fighting back to within one possession and have a shot to win it at the end. There were just too many little mistakes on our part in which we beat ourselves. We normally do not do that."
About turnover trouble
"We talked about empty possessions and we had too many of them. I knew based on Portland State's style of play we would have a chance to get back in the game just based on the number of possessions we were going to have, but we turned the ball over too much. Of the fifteen we had, there were a lot of those that were either careless or our guys trying to do too much. We will learn from it and get better from it."
About the slow start
"Coming off of Christmas Break you can lose some of your momentum and it will be interesting to go back and look at the tape and see if that happened to us. Give credit to Portland State too, they were making some tough shots early on and had some guys who usually do not make threes make them to gain confidence early."
Stat of the Game
Coming into the game averaging 11.2 3-point field goal makes a game UNC was unable to find its rhythm making just five on Saturday.
