Three Swimming Relays Qualify for the NIC at Phill Hansel Invite

UNC swim and dive had three relays qualify for the NIC, 29 lifetime best swims and nine top 10 program swims
HOUSTON – Three Northern Colorado relays led the way for the Bears at the Phill Hansel Invite hosted by the University of Houston over the weekend by swimming times that qualified for the 2020 CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
Overall for the meet, UNC finished it with 27 lifetime best times and nine top 10 program swims to go with the three qualifying times.
The 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams all qualified for the NIC. The group of Maddy Moore, Petra Kis, AJ Popp and Emily Hamel finished the 200 free with a time of 1:33.31 to take third place at the meet against some top team.
Moore and Hamel were also apart of the 200 and 400 medley relay team. Joining the two were Maria Heymans and Hallie Peterson. The quartet touched the wall in the 1:43.28 in the 200 and 3:46.25 in the 400.
Maddy Moore had the top two individual finishes for UNC as well taking sixth place in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. She swam an even 23.00 in the 50 free finals and 50.23 in the 100 free final. Over the three-day meet, she had a third and eight place finish in the 100 back (56.57) and 100 fly (57.17) C-Finals.
Emily Hamel joined Moore with a top 10 finish in the 50 free taking first place in the B-Final, for ninth overall in the meet. She finished the sprint in 23.36 in the finals.
Three Bears swam in the B-Finals of their respective events in Petra Kis, AJ Popp and Paula Nunez. Kis took third place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.5. Meanwhile Popp and Nunez finished second and eighth in the 200 Back with times of 2:00.80 and 2:04.39, respectively. Nunez also swam in the C-Finals of the 400 IM taking fifth place by finishing the race in 4:27.11.
Leilani Herrera won the C-Finals of the 100 Breast with a time of 1:03.00 and was joined in the finals by teammate Maria Heymans who took fifth in 1:03.67. Heymans swam in the 200 Breast C-Final taking first with a time of 2:18.94.
Hallie Peterson and Anna Austin were the final two Bears to compete in a C-Final both in the 200 fly. Peterson placed second with a time of 2:03.58 and Austin eighth at 2:08.76.
Sophomore Celeste Llona had the best finish for UNC in the 1 and 3-meter diving with scores of 244.80 and 230.70 to finish 14th and 19th, respectively. On the platform, freshman Tori Sayers had the best performance by a Bear taking 23rd with a score of 148.25.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado is out of competition until the new year when they go to Colorado Springs to compete in a quad-meet with Seattle, Cal Baptist and Air Force.
UNC's next home meet comes on February 7 when they host Colorado State.
