UNC men's basketball is adding size to its frontcourt from across the pond in 7-footer Theo Hughes. The center comes to UNC from London, England where he played for Barking Abbey. He also plays on Great Britain's U18 Division I team.
"Adding Theo to our program is really exciting and addresses a major needed on the interior for us. Theo's size and strength will certainly be assets, but what really sets Theo apart from most traditional post players is his skill level and his IQ," head coach Jeff Linder said. "He's been trained at one of the most prestigious prep programs in the U.K. at Barking Abbey School, and he's also had extremely valuable experience playing for the Great Britain national team for the past several years and been a big part of his country's success on the European stage. We believe Theo's best days are ahead of him and that he will have a big impact on our program for many years!"
The big man is averaging close to a double-double in the NBL 1 this season with 10 points and eight rebounds a game. He not only excels on the court but in the classroom as well having earned the 2018-19 Student-Athlete of the Year award for his high school and academic awards for his studies in history, psychology and physical education.
"We are delighted for Theo having committed to UNC, they are a great program and have a tremendous staff," Barking Abby head coach James Vear said. "We are excited to see Theo start the next part of his basketball journey, I cannot speak highly enough about Theo both on and off the court, I am sure he will be a big success at UNC"
Â
While choosing the Bears, he also saw interest from Saint Mary's, UC-Santa Barbara, Washington State, Stanford and UTSA.
Â
Hughes looks to study criminology while at Northern Colorado.
