@UNCBearsWrestle Shows Improvement Against No. 16 Panthers

Northern Colorado faced five ranked Northern Iowa wrestlers in the dual, falling 38-6
CEDAR FALLS, IA- It was not the result Northern Colorado wrestling hoped for, dropping its dual against No. 16 Northern Iowa 38-6. The Panthers used three falls and three tech falls to power the win over UNC on Friday night.
"Tonight was a good experience for our guys to wrestle in a hostile environment," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We made some costly mistakes that hurt us and were just outmatched at a few weights. Overall, I see us continuing to improve. Jacob Seely looked dominate and Dalton Robertson toughed his way to a win. I'm proud of the improvements these guys are making."
Robertson would take the mat against Austin Yant in the 184 lb match and Yant led 2-0 after the first two periods. In the third, Yant was hit with a penalty and Robertson scored a takedown with three seconds left to rally for the 3-2 decision win.Â
No. 14 Seely took the mat against Tyrell Gordan at 197 lb and Seely opened a 2-0 lead in the first period. Seely picked up two more takedowns and added riding time, along with a penalty point to win 9-2 by decision.Â
The dual started in the 125 lb weight class, as No. 17 Rico Montoya faced No. 24 Jacob Schwarm. In the second period, Schwarm had the fall over Montoya at 4:10 to give UNI a quick 6-0 lead.
Sean Cannon would face Jack Skudlarczyk in the 133 lb match, with Skudlarczyk getting the 17-2 tech fall over Cannon at the end of the match. The Panthers were up 11-0 to start the dual.
In the 141 lb match, Chris Sandoval had a tough match against No. 6 Josh Alber. Sandoval scored an early takedown on Alber in the first period to lead 2-1. Alber would take the lead in the second period with an escape and a takedown. Sandoval had another takedown Alber in the third period but scored two of his own to hold on for the 10-6 win.Â
Armando Santillan faced No. 10 Max Thomsen in the 149 lb match, with Thomsen earning a 16-1 tech fall at 5:55. UNI had now broken the dual open, leading the Bears 19-0.
Jordan Robison battled Paden Moore in the 157 lb match, but trailed 3-0 after the first two periods. Robison made a good comeback on
Moore, with a takedown and two escapes in the third, but it was not enough to get the win. Moore won 5-4 by decision.
After the intermission, Macoy Flanagan faced No. 12 Bryce Steiert at 165 lb. Steiert got UNI's second fall of the night over Flanagan at 0:51.
Sethan Bogulski went against No. 8 Taylor Lujan in the 174 lb match. Bogulski dropped the match 21-6 by tech fall at 6:35.
In the final match of the night, Robert Winters Jr. faced Carter Isley in the 285 lb match. Isley managed to get the fall over Winters Jr. at 2:25.
Northern Iowa defeated UNC 38-6 to drop the Bears record to 4-6 and 0-4 in the Big 12. UNI had one point deducted for misconduct during the match.
"We will have a short term memory of tonight as we begin preparing for NDSU on Sunday." Nickerson added.
