Northern Colorado fell to Oregon State 27-12 on Friday
Northern Colorado dropped its dual against Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Friday night, 27-12. UNC won three matches in the dual with Dante Rodriguez making a statement in his first match as Bear with a Fall in the 149 lb bout. Macoy Flanagan and Dalton Robertson picked up decision wins at 165 lb and 184 lb respectively.
"I thought going into the match we would have an opportunity to win and we were just a little short," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "I think the score doesn't indicate how close the dual actually was. I think we wrestled decent and the guys that won, wrestled with a lot of confidence. The guys that didn't lacked a little confidence that we need to improve on."
The dual started in the 125 lb match, as No. 4 Ronnie Bresser defeated No. 17 Rico Montoya in an 11-5. Montoya had a takedown in the third period to pull within 4-7, but Bresser responded with his own takedown to reestablish his lead and hold on for the win. Â
Sean Cannon would drop the next match, 9-4 by decision to Kegan Calkins and the Beavers had a 6-0 lead out of the gate.
Oregon State extended the lead in the next match, as Grant Willits earned the fall over Chris Sandoval at 6:46.
Rodriguez made his debut in the Blue and Gold with a fall at 6:38 to put UNC on the board, trailing 6-12. The transfer from Iowa State and former NCAA qualifier scored two takedowns and a four-point, near fall in the win over Josh Reyes.
"I got a little fatigued at the end of the match," Rodriugez said. "It was my first dual back and I was able to get those double-overs. It's something I always try to go for because guys are not always familiar with being in those positions. Sometimes they give up the corners. I was able to hook his leg and threw him over. It's something I'm familiar with and I went for it and got [the fall]."
"I think Dante is very good," Nickerson said of Rodriguez. "I recruited him to Iowa State and it has kind of come full circle having him here for his senior season. He had a lot of work to do to get here in the first place and He put in the time."
Jordan Robison went against No. 18 Hunter Willits at 157, losing the match 10-4 by decision.
Flanagan earned his first home dual victory of his career with a 6-3 decision win over Aaron Olmos. In the match, Flanagan scored two takedowns to secure the win and pull UNC within six of the Beavers at 15-9.
Colt Doyle topped Sethan Bogulski 10-2 by decision at 174 to give Oregona State a 10 point lead at 19-9.
Robertson continued his strong season with a 6-2 decision win over Bob Coleman. Robertson used a four-point, near fall in the second period and adding riding time at the end of the match to pick up his ninth win the season and get UNC back in the dual at 19-12.
Trenton Schultz got the start at 197 lb and faced former UNC wrestler JaMarcus Grant, who transferred. Schutlz dropped the match in overtime 3-1 by sudden victory.
Robert Winters Jr. had a tough test at 285 facing No. 4 Amar Dhesi. Winters Jr. fought hard, but dropped the match 22-7 by tech fall at 6:22.
Northern Colorado fell in the dual 27-12 and its record dropped to 2-5 on the season.
"We have two big road weeks are coming up and its always a good bonding experience when the guys are on the road and have that comradery. It's dual-meet wrestling and little more strategic than tournaments where you can just go out and worry about yourself," Nickerson added.
