Rico Montoya, Keilan Torres, Dylan Gabel, and Jacob Seely hold spots in Coaches Panel and RPI rankings
GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado wrestling makes the trip up 1-25 to take on No. 17 Wyoming on Saturday night.
UNC looks to finish the dual season strong after dropping its last four, with the most recent loss coming a week ago against West Virginia (34-16).
The most recent NCAA DI Coaches rankings were released on Thursday and four UNC wrestlers maintained their presence in the polls. The rankings are one the factors determining who qualifies for the NCAA Championships in March. Rico Montoya, Keilan Torres, Dylan Gabel, and Jacob Seely are in strong position to qualify and compete for the Bears in Cleveland, Ohio. The four UNC wrestlers were also ranked in the initial RPI standings that were also released on Thursday. The RPI is another important component in determining NCAA qualifiers.
Rico Montoya [133] is slated at No. 25 by the Coaches' panel and No. 24 by the RPI rankings. In the 2017-18 season, Montoya has been a steady performer for UNC with a 17-9 record and a 6-4 in duals. Montoya picked up an 8-5 decision win over West Virginia's Matthew Schmitt in his latest match. After qualifying for the NCAA's last year, Montoya is on the right path to make it two years in a row for the Bears.
Keilan Torres [165] continues to perform at a high level this season and is ranked No. 20 in the Coaches' panel and No. 16 by the RPI. Currently, Torres has a 17-6 overall record and 9-1 in dual matches, with his most recent victory over West Virginia's Nick Kiussis. Kiussis is ranked No. 32 by the RPI. With nine falls this year, Torres ranks ninth in DI, maintaining his aggressive style. Like Montoya, Torres is also looking to be a two-time NCAA qualifier, after competing last season.
Dylan Gabel [184] has been one of UNC's most reliable starters this season and comes in at No. 22 for the Coaches' panel and No. 20 in the RPI rankings. On the season, Gabel has put together an 18-7 record and 9-1 in dual matches. The one loss for Gabel did come in his most recent match against West Virginia's Brenden McRill (Dec. 3-1). Gabel can join Torres and Montoya as two-time NCAA qualifiers if the trio continues to compete at a high level to finish out the dual schedule and into the Big 12 Championships.
Despite his injury, Jacob Seely [194] is among the nation's best in his weight class, ranking No. 20 in the Coaches' panel. Seely has not competed since the early January dual against Iowa State, but still maintains a 14-7 overall record and 1-2 in dual matches. If Seely's ranking hold, he can become the fourth qualifier for UNC at the NCAA's this season.
The whole Northern Colorado team will have an opportunity to make a statement to the nation this Saturday night when they take on No. 17 Wyoming in Laramie.
Scouting Wyoming
