UNC swimming & diving broke seven school records, has six qualify for postseason at Phill Hansel Invite
HOUSTON – It was a historic weekend for Northern Colorado swimming and diving at the Phill Hansel Invitational. The Bears broke seven school records, had one swimmer, Maria Heymans, post two NCAA B qualifying times, six swimmers qualify for the College Swimming National Invitational Championship in March and set 31 personal best times. It is the first time UNC has ever qualified any swimmer for the College Swimming National Invitational Championship.
Maria Heymans posted not one, but two NCAA B qualifying times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In both races, she also broke the school's record time. In the 100 breast, Heymans broke the school record during the preliminary round, touching the wall in 1:01.79 to qualify for finals race A. During the finals she was a tick slower, finishing in 1:02.49.
In the 200 breast, she set the school record in the finals with a 2:13.51, improving by five seconds over her preliminary time. Both of Heyman's times also qualifier for the College Swimming National Invitational Championship.
Of the final five record-breaking performances, Maddy Moore was a part of four of them. Moore, set individual marks in the 50 and 100 free while being on the 200 and 400 free relay teams that reset records.
Moore, not only set a new school record in the 50 free but also won the event with a time of 22.86. She swam 0.02 seconds better in the prelim round at 22.84. She qualified for the 100 free finals with a time of 50.55 and made big improvements in the finals clocking in at 50.29.
Morgan King and Emily Hamel joined Moore on both the 200 and 400 relay teams that set records, with Nicole DePooter swimming in the 200 and Rose Saya in the 400. The team's record-breaking time for the 200 ended up being 1:32.95 to finish fourth overall in the invite. With Saya taking over in the 400, UNC finished in 3:24.86 to place seventh in the event.
The final record-breaking performance of the weekend belonged to freshman Rose Saya in the 500 free. She broke the previous record held by Carleigh Barrette (4:53.52) by touching the pad at 4:52.85.
Along with Heymans 100 and 200 breaststroke times qualifying for the College Swimming National Invitational Championships, UNC's 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams also qualified, along with the 200 medley relay. The medley team consisted of Moore, Heymans, King and Hamel who swam the race in 1:43.58.
In the team scoring, UNC finished 10th of 12 teams with 415 points. Host Houston won the team results with over 1,000 points.
Northern Colorado is off until January 11 when they face defending WAC Champion Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
