OGDEN, Utah – Basketball season is just a few weeks away and the Big Sky Conference announced its Preseason All-Conference women's team Tuesday afternoon. Reigning Big Sky MVP and Big Sky Tournament MVP Savannah Smith found herself on the preseason team for the second straight season.
Smith is coming off a 2017-18 season in which she helped guide the Bears to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Big Sky Regular Season championship and Big Sky Tournament championship. Smith averaged 18.4 points per game to lead the team while also finding her open teammate plenty of times too with 3.8 assists a game. She connected on 32.1 percent of her 3-point attempts last year making 71 of them.
In Big Sky action last season, Smith upped her scoring average to 19.6 points a game, adding in 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals. That effort earned her Big Sky MVP honors.
During the Big Sky Tournament, she backed up the MVP award setting a new tournament record scoring 78 points over three games. Her best performance came in the championship game when she scored a career-high 34 points including hitting five of her six 3-point attempts to help UNC cruise past second-seed Idaho 91-69.
Idaho's Mikayla Ferenz was selected preseason MVP and joined on the team by teammate Taylor Pierce. Portland State's Ashley Bolston and Sidney Riely along with Idaho State's Grace Kenyon rounded out the Preseason All-Big Sky team.
The team was voted on by the conference's head coaches and media.
