Romano, Welch Grab Top 10 Finishes
FINAL ROUND RESULTS
Colorado Springs, CO – Things did not go as planned for Northern Colorado's men's golf team during Sunday's final round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, as they shot a seven-over par 295. Despite the disappointing finish, the Bears were still -1 overall for the tournament and took home a solid seventh place finish in the 19-team field.
Inside the Scorecard:
Senior, Andrew Romano continued his steady play, shooting and even-par 72. Romano proved to be the Bears most consistent player over the weekend, as he was the only one to avoid a round over par. After a birdie at the first hole, he had three bogeys before the turn leaving him at +2 after nine holes. Romano avoided any mistakes on the back nine as he mixed in a couple birdies to go along with seven pars to bring his scorecard back to even par on the round. Romano was -6 for the tournament, good enough for a top seven finish on the individual leaderboard.
Coming off of his school record 63, sophomore Coby Welch shot a six-over par 78. Welch came into the day just one stroke back of the individual lead. He carded three birdies on the day, but it was six bogeys and a triple bogey that were too much to recover from. Welch's play was still good enough for a top 10 finish.
Junior, Josh Matz continued his consistent play with another 73. Matz scattered three birdies and four bogeys on the day to end at +1 for the second day in a row. The junior was +2 for the tournament, good enough for 40th place, and did not card anything worse than a bogey over his 54 holes.
Improving his score for the second day in a row was senior, Sam Marley. Marley's day consisted of 14 pars and was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 11th hole. The senior concluded the tournament at +14.
Team Results:
Wyoming continued its stellar play, taking home the team crown, finishing at -29. Colorado State (-24), Colorado (-21), UNLV (-13) and Utah (-12) rounded out the top five. Northern Colorado (-1) was tops among Big Sky Conference members. The Bears finished ahead of 15th place, Weber State (+20) and 18th place, Southern Utah (+30).
Coaches Comments:
Head Coach, Roger Prenzlow
"Although we had a tough day team wise, the guys did some positive stuff. We did not make critical putts early in the round and struggled all day to get things going. It was great to see Andrew have a good tournament and even though we had a tough day today, he had a nice event. Sam stepped up with a good round today. As a team, we beat some nice programs here and need to take the positives and move on to the Ram Masters next week."
Up Next:
The Bears will be back in action on September 18-19 in Fort Collins at the Ram Masters Invitational.
