@UNCBEARSFB Take Care of Business in Season Opener

HOW IT HAPPENED:
UNC put its foot on the gas pedal and never let off in the first half, scoring 28 points before fans even had a chance to sit down and get comfortable.
It took the Bears a little over 10 minutes to score all four touchdowns to jump out in front after the end of the first quarter 28-0.
Playing only two quarters, second year quarterback, Jacob Knipp was efficient. Knipp ended his day 11-of-16 for 185 yards and two TDs. Knipp's strikes came on a 32-yard dime to wide out, Stephen Miller and a 5-yard screen to Ellis Onic II. Miller led all receivers on the day with four catches for 89 yards and the touchdown.
Halftime came and went and had the Bears up 42-0, tacking on two more TDs for good measure in the second quarter. One of those touchdowns came from power back, Darius Graham.
Graham muscled his way into the end zone twice on the afternoon and finished with 17 yards on the ground. In all, the RB corps produced six of the team's eight touchdowns.
Brandon Cartagena and Zachary Lindsay had the most productive days in the backfield for UNC. Cartagena rushed for 87 yards on 10 carries, while Lindsay had just two rushes for 88 yards, including an 87-yard burst down the sideline for a score.
After halftime, Northern Colorado was able to get some younger players game time experience and Rocky Mountain took advantage.
The Battlin' Bears were able to put up 10 points in the third quarter and 17 more in the fourth, outscoring UNC in the second half 27-14.
Offensively, RMC's QB, Chase White had the most productive day for the team. White passed for 347 yards on 31-of-51 attempts and had two TD passes. Receiver, Kalen Reed also had a strong showing, hauling in six grabs for 103 yards.
GAME CHANGER:
Keifer Glau had an all-around solid day on special teams and at safety. Glau had five punts for 244 yard (48.8 avg.) with a long of 64 yard and three punts inside the 20. Glau also had one tackle and a key PBU on a third down situation, forcing RMC to punt.
KEY STAT:
At halftime, the Bears produced 354 yards of total offense with six touchdowns. Meanwhile, the UNC defense held Rocky Mountain College to just 117 yards of total offense and zero points.
IN THEIR WORDS:
Jacob Knipp, Redshirt Sophomore QB:
"There were a few things that we could have done better, but as far as everything we studied over the week, Rocky Mountain came out and did the things that we expected, so we were able to get some plays that we wanted and we executed the way we wanted to and put points up on the scoreboard pretty quickly and that was the goal."
Darius Graham, Senior RB:
"It was a team effort from the running backs today, we were in it together and it didn't matter who scored the touchdowns. Cartagena and Trae [Riek] set both of those touchdowns up for me and I made sure to tell them that on the sideline – but we're a team and we win together and we lose together and that's the mentality we have. As you saw today, coach had no problem putting us all in the game – he trusts us to go out there and get the job done."
Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr.:
"We came out and we did what we were supposed to do in the first half. We wanted to come out and start fast – it's like I told our guys, if we come out like we're supposed to, in the right mental frame of mind, we should have done to this team what we did in the first half. It was really a game for us that we can take the first half and look at it and say, this is how we have to come out and play and do what we need to do – and then we can teach off the second half because it was nothing more than undisciplined football, giving them 27 points off of simple mistakes that can be corrected."
NOTEABLES:
- UNC improves to 3-3 in home openers under Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr.
- The 56 points scored ties the program's Division I single game scoring record that the Bears set in 2015 against UC Davis, when they defeated the Aggies 56-27.
- The Bears produced 457 yards of total offense, including 272 yards on the ground and 185 through the air.
- Redshirt freshman LB, Luke Nelson led all tacklers on the day with a total seven tackles.
- Redshirt sophomore RB, Trae Riek led the Bears in all purpose yards with 55 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.
UP NEXT:
Northern Colorado is on the road for its next two games. The team heads to Abilene, Texas to face off against Abilene Christian in a rematch of the 2015 game, where the Bears defeated the Wildcats 40-36. That game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 5:00 p.m. (MT). The next home game for UNC will be Oct. 1 in the Big Sky opener against Northern Arizona. Tickets for the NAU game can be purchased here.
