@UNCBEARSFB Picks up First Loss of the Season at Colorado State
9/17/2016 7:16:00 PM | Football
UNC outscored the Rams 21-9 in the second half after being shut out in the first two quarters and the 21 points were the most the team has ever scored against an FBS opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Behind the arm of a true freshman quarterback in Colin Hill, Colorado State jumped on the board early scoring the first 38 points of the game, including 21 in the first quarter.
The Bears start looked promising, stopping the Rams on the opening drive and moving the ball 77 yards in their opening series before a QB, Kyle Sloter interception in the red zone shifted the momentum to CSU.
UNC was able to move the ball, but couldn't convert on key third downs early in the first half and took a 38-0 deficit into the locker room.
Northern Colorado got on the board to open the third quarter, putting together an 11 play, 75-yard drive that ended in a Hakeem Deggs TD reception from 17 yards out.
After DE, Mikhail Dubose forced a fumble on the first offensive possession of the second half for CSU, the Bears made good off the turnover.
UNC started the drive in Rams territory and it took just four plays for Sloter to find wide out, Alex Wesley from 29 yards deep for the score to cut the Colorado State advantage to 38-14.
Before it was all said and done, Northern Colorado found its way into the end zone one final time on the heels of running back, Trae Riek. Riek scampered into pay dirt from nine yards out, completing a 10 play, 92-yard drive to bring it to 47-21 after two field goals in the fourth quarter by Colorado State.
In his first career start, Kyle Sloter reached the 300-yard mark, tossing it for 318 on 22-of-33 attempts with two touchdowns and one INT.
The Bears also had a 100-yard receiver for the second straight game. This time it was Stephen Miller who hauled in four catches for 102 yards.
Riek led the ground attack finishing with 87 yards on 22 carries and one TD.
GAME CHANGER:
CSU's quarterback Collin Hill proved to be the difference maker in the game. Hill, in his first start for the Rams, threw four touchdowns passes on the afternoon and rushed for one more. His stat line was 21-of-27 for 315 yards and 56 yards rushing with a combined five TDs.
KEY STAT:
Northern Colorado was held to under 100 yards rushing for the first time this season. The Bears finished with 93 ground yards on 34 attempts.
COACH COLLINS' THOUGHTS:
Overall thoughts on the game:
"The biggest positive was that our kids just didn't lay down at halftime. I challenged them at the half to come out and battle – it's easy when one side of the ball is clicking and you're in the game, you fight. It's easier to give up when you're down. When you get punched in the mouth in the first half, you can throw out the white flag, but we didn't do that and I appreciated that."
On the first half:
"CSU came out and found our young guys (secondary) in the first half, but it was good for them in a way because now they know it's coming. There's no reason to play scared, or to be worried. Most of the plays they were worried about the ball being caught on them. They were in position, but they weren't making a play. For us, it's about building on that and getting them to understand, that is the life of a DB – You're going to get burned sometimes, but don't be scared to make a play."
Heading into the bye week:
"After today, we can show them (the team) they have heart. We fought and they played in the second half. The offense moved well and put some drives together. We should have had four scores in the half and now we just have to get these kids to understand that we have a good football team. Minus the injuries, minus the guys we've lost – we have a good football team."
NOTABLES:
- The 21 points were the most UNC has ever put up on an FBS opponent. 14 was the previous record, also coming against CSU in 2011.
- For two consecutive weeks, UNC has had a 100-yard receiver and a 300-yard passer. Sloter threw for 418 yards last week and followed it up with 318 against the Rams. Receiver, Alex Wesley had a 112 yards receiving last week at Abilene Christian and Stephen Miller finished Saturday with 102 yards.
- Alex Wesley and Hakeem Deggs have caught a touchdown pass in back-to-back weeks. Wesley had two TD catches against Abilene Christian, with Deggs having one, and both recorded one against CSU.
- The Bears are now 0-9 in games against FBS teams.
- Punter, Keifer Glau now has five punts on the season over 50 yards or more, He finished the day with four punts for 176 yards (44.0 avg.)
