The Bears dropped eight of ten matches on Saturday night
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Northern Colorado Bears fell to the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday night, 37-7, winning just two of the ten matches.
"Tonight was a tough one," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "Our guys faced a lot of adversity this past week and it was tough for us to respond. We also had a couple of guys dinged up, so over the next week we'll try to heal up and focus on getting ready for Utah Valley. Rico did have a night; he looked great out there."
After losing the first five matches of the night, it was Rico Montoya who put points on the board first for the Bears at 133, wrestling against Drake Foster in a battle of the true freshmen. Montoya picked up two takedowns in the first period to take an early 4-1 lead, and tacked on another point in the second period after a second stall call on Foster. Montoya escaped within 11 seconds in the third period after starting down, and it took him only four seconds to get another takedown, with a four-point nearfall shortly thereafter. Another stall warning on Foster, as well as having over five minutes of riding time accumulated for the advantage point, gave Montoya the major decision win, 14-2, the Bears' only bonus point win of the night.
The final match of the night, at 165 pounds, brought Keilan Torres out on the mat. Torres battled it out for the Bears, landing the only other win of the night for the squad with a decision win over Kyle Pope. Torres earned an escape 27 seconds into the first period, but could only hold Pope down for 11 seconds before giving up the escape. Another takedown late in the period, plus a quick two-point nearfall, made it 6-1 in Torres' favor at the end of the first three minutes. With the only points in the second period coming from Pope's escape, Torres started the final period of the match down, earning an escape of his own just five seconds in. Despite being taken down and warned for stalling, Torres took the match, 8-4, to add three team points on the board.
The Bears lost the remaining eight matches on the night, including two by major decision, one technical fall, two pins, and one default.
UNC will be back in Greeley for the next two weekends to close out their regular season with home meets against Utah Valley (Feb. 12) and Utah Valley (Feb. 17).
