PDF BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Ala.- Northern Colorado (3-8) let one slip away on the road on Monday night at Jacksonville State (4-10). The Bears overcame a 13-point first half deficit and led on two different occasions in the second half, but solid free throw shooting from the Gamecocks sealed UNC's fate, 79-76.
It was the team's best shooting game of the season as they finished 28-of-52 (54.0%) from the floor, but just four makes from beyond the arc (4-of-12) and a 69.0% night from the free throw line (16-of-23) discarded the solid effort from the field as the Bears remain winless on the road (0-4).
Junior guard, Dallas Anglin was hoping for a W on his birthday, but had to settle for a career night instead. Anglin scored a career-high 23 points, finishing 77.7% from the floor (7-of-9) and chipped in two makes on two attempts from three. He was also87.5% (7-of-8) from the charity stripe and added in a team-high three assists.
In three games, the junior has now produced 19, 18, and 23-point efforts.
Two other Bears finished in double figures in the defeat. Junior guards, Jordan Wilson and Anthony Johnson finished with 12 and 10 points respectively, but didn't reach those marks until the final minutes of the game and were held in check most of the night.
Wilson has now scored at least 10 points or more in all 11 games for UNC, while Johnson has only had one game this season where he hasn't reached double digits.
"We let one slip here and it's very disappointing because this was a very winnable game in a winnable atmosphere and those opportunities in Division I basketball don't come along very often," said head coach B.J. Hill. "We didn't have some guys bring their best mental effort and that's disappointing. To me, this came down to some big time missed box outs. We lost this game on the second chance opportunities."
It was again a tale of two halves for Northern Colorado as they got out to a slow start to begin the game.
Jacksonville State opened on a 9-3 run on its home court to beginas the Bears were just 1-of-7 on its first eight attempts on offense.
The Gamecocks got up by as many as 13 (26-13, 28-15) before UNC worked its way back into the game.
A 6-0 spurt from the Bears got it back within single digits, but Jacksonville State squandered any momentum, matching the rally and going back on top by ten, 38-28 with 3:19 to play in the first act.
Northern Colorado was able to get the lead back down to six before the end of the half with a Wilson layup at the buzzerto make it a 44-38 ball game at the break.
Despite the 59.0% shooting from UNC in the first 20 minutes of regulationthey still trailed as the Gamecocks made it count from beyond the arc, making all six of their threes in the first half.
"We did play better defensively in the second half. I challenged them to run guys off the three-point line - we let them squat and shoot too much in the first half," Hill added. "They got off thirteen of them and made six in the first half and in the second half they go 0-for-5, so we made some adjustments. If we play the entire game like we did in the second half, this is a double-digit win for us."
The Bears were much more sound defensively after intermission, holding JSU to just 28.6% shooting from downtown, compared to the 40.0% they allowed in the first half.
UNC fought tooth and nail and finally gained its first lead of the night with 9:41 to play in the contest (55-54) off an old-fashioned three point play from junior forward, Tanner Morgan who knocked down the jumper and converted on the free throw after the foul.
The lead was gone as fast as it appeared with four quick points from the opposition.
Northern Colorado was back and forth the rest of the game, with five lead changes and two ties in the remaining eight minutes of the game.
With the game tied at 71-71, JSU's Christian Cunningham got behind the Bears defense and converted on the lay up to make it a two-point game with 1:09 to go.
Wilson was unable to convert on the jumper with 48 seconds to go and with a defensive rebound and six straight makes at the free throw line in the remaining seconds, the Gamecocks sealed the win.
"It's frustrating because the games that they have bought in to playing defense, i.e. the Colorado State game, they defended at a high level, they rebounded at a high level and what do you know, they had a great, great win," Hill said. "Where is that same energy and focus tonight - it shouldn't be who's on the other team, it has to come from within that provides your motivation. If it depends on who you're playing and where you're at, then you have performances like these."
UNC has one final tune up before Big Sky play begins as they now head to Jackson, Mississippi to face the Bulldogs of Mississippi State at the Mississippi Coliseum on Wednesday, December 23. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
