CEDAR CITY, Utah – Northern Colorado cross country competed in the Big Sky Championships on Saturday in Cedar City, Utah at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course. The men's competition consisted of an 8K while the women ran a 5K.
The relatively young Bears squad took 11th place overall in the women's division and 12th place in the men's race. The men had 318 points and strung together a total time of 2:21:53.0. The women's team ended with 280 points and a total time of 1:40:13.5.
"Optimistically we were looking for a little stronger showing, especially on the women's side," said first year cross country coach Trent Mack. "Eight of our thirteen athletes competing were freshman. They all ran very hard, but we didn't quite compete overall with the confidence I've seen in this team earlier in the year. We had some good individual efforts in areas though. We gained a lot of valuable experience for the direction we need to move the program to be more competitive."
It was freshman Erin Thomas that once again led the women's team and posted the highest finish of any runner for UNC.
Thomas earned 41st place, finishing in a time of 19:38.8.
For the men, it was freshman Keaton Duncan that paced the team. In his first BSC Championships, Duncan crossed the finish line in 28:06.4, claiming 57th.
