The Bears had a big game from their Bench on Sunday, outscoring the Rattlers 62-19.
GREELEY, Colo. – A true team effort on Sunday resulted in a blowout, 95-56 victory for Northern Colorado (4-2, 0-0 Big Sky) over Florida A&M (0-8, 0-0) as every single player for the Bears scored in the contest.
"I thought we had some guys step up and play some good minutes for us," Head Coach B.J. Hill said. "I thought Drew [Bender] did a good job. He really did well and was efficient in a few different aspects. We need another guy to step up into the rotation and he might be that guy if he continues to play the way he has been in our last couple of games."
The Rattlers took their only lead of the game early on in the first half after Jermaine Ruttley drove to the rim and laid it in to give FAMU the, 4-2 advantage.
For the third game in a row sophomore guard, Jordan Wilson was electric from beyond the arc, hitting nothing-but-net on a three-ball one minute later, sparking a 16-2 run that took up the next six minutes of action. Wilson finished the first half perfect from three-point range.
The Rattlers stopped the bleeding momentarily off a layup from Craig Bowman to make it a, 21-6 game in favor of UNC with 9:47 remaining in the half.
In the final eight minutes of play, four Northern Colorado players combined for six more three-pointers and took a, 48-26 advantage into halftime.
The Bears ended the first half shooting 61.3% (8-13) from three-point land and 56.7% (17-30) from the floor.
"I thought our maturity level was pretty good today," said Hill. "When you worry about guys not coming in and being as sharp as they should be mentally, it was good to see that sharpness and that effort from some of our guys in the first half."
The second half was more of the same as the Bears scored 16 points in the first nine minutes of play, averaging nearly two points a minute.
Northern Colorado cooled down from beyond the arc, only converting 4-14 (28.6%) of their shots in the second half.
With 8:14 remaining in the game, sophomore guard, Cameron Michael tossed the ball up on a fast break to redshirt freshman, Jeremy Verhagen who completed the alley-oop dunk, giving UNC a thirty-two point lead, 74-42.
The Bears finished off the game outscoring Florida A&M, 21-14 in the final eight minutes of play, picking up their fourth win at home, 95-56.
Northern Colorado posted, 57.6% (34-59) shooting from the field and 44.4% (12-27) from outside the arc in the stat book.
The Bears defense was stout on the afternoon, holding the Rattlers to 33.3% shooting from the field and just 11.1% from three-point land.
Sophomore guard, Drew Bender led UNC in scoring with 14 points, converting 4-7 on three-pointers. Senior forward Dominique Lee posted his second double-double of the season, adding 10 points and hauling in 12 boards. Senior forward, Tim Huskisson and Wilson also got into double-digits, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The men's basketball team won't take the court until next Sunday, Dec. 7 when the square off against in-state rival, Colorado State at Moby Arena in Fort Collins.
