Scott Roberts

Head cross country and track a& field coach, Nick Maas has announced the addition of Scott Roberts to the Northern Colorado staff in August of 2026. Roberts will serve as an assistant coach for the Bears.
Roberts arrived at UNC with over 30 years of coaching experience to UNC and joined the staff after one season at Missouri Valley College as the Director of Women’s and Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field.
There he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the women’s and men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs. He personally coached the jumps and sprints/hurdles and moved the women’s team from last place in the 16-team Heart of America Conference to 9th place, a 7-place (43.75%) improvement in one year.
He also improved the men’s program by 4 team places (18.75%) improvement in one year and produced six first-time All-Conference performers (top 3) in various women’s and men’s events.
Prior to Missouri Valley College Roberts had been a head coach at three other institutions: Hawkeye Community College (2023-25), Muscatine Community School District (2019-23), and Lindenwood University (2012-18).
With a specialty in sprint, jumps, and hurdles he coached at multiple high level programs: Iowa State (1996-2007), Alabama (2007-11), Texas El Paso (2011-12), and Memphis (2019).
During that time he helped produce 49 NCAA All-Americans and four Olympians. He was also a three-time Finalist-NCAA Division I, Southeast Region, Assistant Coach of the Year.
Robert’s serves as a USATF Coaching Education Instructor and holds USATF Level II certifications in Jumps and Sprints/Hurdles/Relays. These experiences have allowed him to remain at the forefront of event-specific technical development and athlete preparation while sharing best practices with coaches across the country.
Along with his work as a coach, he has been published three times writing on the techniques and different aspects of running.
