Aaron Fernandez was hired as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Northern Colorado in December 2022. He also serves as the program’s NFL liaison.
In 2024 Fernandez helped guide Northern Colorado’s defense that was led by a very experienced group at the defensive line position. Of the nine seniors on the team, five were defensive linemen. Sam Iongi-Amituanai and Michael Jordan anchored a front that helped produce a defense that recorded a Top 25 ranking in the nation in third down defense and stop rate, through the first six games. The line combined for 22 negative plays, including five sacks. They also started every game of their Bear career (23). Nobody for the UNC DL has done that in the last five years. Keyvon Lakes continued his disruptive play from 2023 and ranked in the top 15 in the Big Sky in TFL’s and negative plays until injury cut his season short in game nine of his senior season. Over his two seasons upfront, he registered 23 TFL’s and was almost unstoppable on the edge, winning his 1-on-1 battles against tight ends at a 92% clip. On the other side, Marcus Howard continued his disruption, ranking top five in the conference in QB hits and hurries before an injury cut his season short after seven games. David Hoage and Ryan Capasso also highlighted the front with experience, spark and persistent depth. David Hoage wrapped up his illustrious career at UNC with more than 30 games played. The front helped lead a defensive unit that for the second straight year disrupted the Big Sky Conference thru the Air, forcing six INT’s, placing fifth in conference play. The Bears caused havoc for Big Sky opponents on the ground, with the most fumbles recovered and fifth highest total of forced fumbles.

The 2023 Northern Colorado’s Defensive Line marked the first under Fernandez’s guidance. The unit spearheaded an exciting, energetic Defense. The DL unit helped pave the way for one of the nation’s best pass defenses in the Big Sky and FCS. This then led to some impressive team defensive statistics that were near or at the top in the Big Sky Conference. UNC’s Defense was 1st in the conference in INTs (10), was 6th in Sacks with 15, Total Defense (6th), Passing Defense (5th), 4th Down Defense (4th), and Red Zone Defense (4th). Defensive End Marcus Howard garnered Honorable Mention All-Big Sky registering 6 sacks on the season that put him 6th among the conference leaders in Sacks, and Top 50 nationally. Howard’s 8 TFLs put him in the top 15 in the conference at generating negative plays.
The 2022 Southern Utah offensive line helped lead one of the top offensive attacks in FCS and the WAC Conference. Fernandez helped lead a unit alongside veterans Lyle Santos and Christy Nkanu who garnered 1st Team All WAC in the Pre & Postseason. Santos also received pre- and post-season All-American recognitions. The offense had a total output of 4,314 yards while averaging six yards a play and scoring 42 TDs. The OL unit paved the way for a backfield by committee that finished the season with 1,713 YDS, and 22 TDs, and carried the ball for 4.1 YPC. These numbers put the T-Birds rushing attack fourth in the conference. Through the Air protecting for T-Birds QB Justin Miller the OL gave up 18 sacks, that 1.38 Avg a game ranked the Offensive Line in the Top 30 in the country in protecting the QB. Justin Miller’s marks of 65.4% completion percentage, and his 20 TDs through the air, earned him 1st Team All WAC and some All-American Recognition in some publications.
The 2021 Fall season was led again by Braxton Jones anchoring the OL for the Thunderbirds. He again was awarded a First Team All-Big Sky selection as well as numerous publications awarded him as an All-American selection. Jones was also invited to attend the Rees’s Senior Bowl, as well as invited to the NFL Combine. Jones was selected in the 5th round of the NFL Draft, making Jones the 4th Player ever to be Drafted in SUU’s history. Upfront SUU’s OL helped manage the offense to the 4th ranked passing offense in the Big Sky as well as the 5th ranked offense in the conference in 3rd Down efficiency. QB Justin Miller also had the 3rd Best QB Rating in the Big Sky and was 5th in Total Offense in the conference. SUU offense was a Top 50 Passing Offense ranking 38th in all of FCS. SUU’s OL was also top 50 in the country at protecting the QB finishing 47th in all of FCS in sacks allowed.

The 2021 shortened Spring season saw Fernandez mentor All-American Braxton Jones on the offensive line. Jones was tabbed in multiple All-American publications. Jones was also named to the All-Big Sky First Team. In the Spring season, SUU’s OL only allowed 4 QB sacks (.83) a game, ranking it 5th in all of FCS in Sacks Allowed.

Following the conclusion of the 2019 season, center Zach Larsen was named the FCS recipient of the Rimington Award, which is the highest honor a center can receive at the Division I level. Larsen played under the direction of Fernandez for all four years he was in Cedar City. Over the course of his career, Larsen accumulated 10 All-American honors from multiple publications. He was also a 3-time honoree on the Big Sky’s First Team All-Conference.

Along with Larsen being named First Team All-Conference after the 2019 campaign, SUU redshirt sophomore Braxton Jones also earned a spot on the All-Conference Third Team.

Behind the T-Bird offensive line in 2019, SUU gained 1,391 yards on the ground and scored 19 touchdowns, while picking up 3,256 yards and 19 touchdowns through the air.

In 2018 Southern Utah's offensive line was recognized in the pre-season as Larsen was tabbed in multiple preseason All-American publications after his stellar 2017 campaign. Also, Southern Utah's tackle Marquez Tucker was tabbed a pre-season All-American in Phil Steele's publication. Through a rough season, and some injuries across the board to the team. SUU's offensive line guided by Fernandez battled all year long to still lead SUU to some impressive offensive numbers. SUU's offense finished 27th in total offense in the country. SUU's rushing attack finished the season with an impressive 4.5 ypc, and a total of 188 yds a game. That mark put SUU's rushing attack ranked in the Top 50 in the country. SUU's offense also finished 29th in the country in 3rd down conversions and 11th in the country in 4th down conversions. SUU's offensive line helped protect multiple QB's throughout the year as SUU QB's were only sacked 17 times on the season. The rushing attack was done by the committee as 8 ball carriers impacted SUU's attack. The committee amassed 2,108 yds, and 22 TDs. Jay Green (855, 7 TD), James Felila (264, 1 TD), Austin Ewing (273, 3 TD), Karris Davis (238, 6 TD), Chris Helbig (145, 5 TD), Terrance Beasley (123), Lelon Dillard (116), and Lance Lawson (94). This is the 3rd season in a row SUU's offensive line has blocked for a backfield that has gone over 2,000 yds. SUU's offensive line saw some awards, and honors in the postseason as well. Also, in doing so SUU captured its 2nd Big Sky title in 3 years and earned a top 8 seed in the National FCS Playoffs. SUU's offensive line guided by coach Fernandez helped lead that charge offensively as SUU finished in the Top 25 in multiple offensive categories. The offensive line helped protect QB Patrick Tyler on his way to throwing for 2,800 yds and 20 TD's only being sacked 19 times. In Patrick Tyler's time with this core of offensive lineman he was able to set numerous school records and is in the Top 10 of every major QB statistical category in school history. Along the way, SUU's rushing attack amassed 2,212 yds and 28 TD's. Lead by a committee of James Felila (743, 8 TD), Jay Green (688, 14 TD), Patrick Tyler (492, 5 TD), and Terrance Beasley (289, 1 TD). This is the second year in a row SUU's offensive line has led a backfield for over 2,000 yds rushing. SUU's offensive line was also highlighted by some individuals. Zach Larsen earned 1st Team All-Big Sky, Marquez Tucker earned 2nd Team All-Big Sky, and PJ Nu'usa earned 3rd Team All-Big Sky.

In 2016 Coach Fernandez due to unforeseen circumstances found himself coaching a young and inexperienced offensive line. The offensive line that had some question marks at the beginning of the season protected QB Patrick Tyler on his way to throwing for 2,296 yards and 23 touchdowns. Also, the OL helped pave the way for RB Malik Brown who was the first 1,000 yd rusher for SUU in 16 years. RG Evan Ross received Big Sky Honorable Mention for his season's efforts the second time he was recognized on that list.

In 2015 Fernandez guided a young offensive line unit that had three Big Sky Honorable mention players in Andrew Eide, Evan Ross, and Keyan Norman. As well as a Big Sky Championship. Offensively, the last seven games of the year the SUU Offense ranked first in total offense among FCS teams. QB Ammon Olsen threw for 2,956 yards and 22 touchdowns. SUU’s leading rusher came by way of Malik Brown who rushed for 818 yards with 7 touchdowns, as well as averaging 5.1 yards per carry. The 2015 Thunderbirds earned a Big sky Championship and an automatic bid in the FCS Playoffs.

In 2014 Fernandez guided Punter Tate Lewis to 17th in the Nation in Net Punting with a mark of 42.2 yards, as well as 11th in the Nation in Punting with a 43.4 yd average. The Kickoff Return Defense in 2014 finished 12th in the Nation with a 16.54 yd average.

In 2013 Fernandez made an immediate impact on the Special Teams as he coached long snapper Chandler Dowell to Freshmen All-American honors and kicker Colton Cook to a first-team all-Big Sky Conference accolades. The kicking game was among the best in the nation as Cook converted 21 of his 25 attempts (84%) to finish 8th in field goal percentage and 3rd in the nation in field goal conversions converting 1.54 field goals per game. Punter Brock Miller also earned honorable mention all-Big Sky honors under Fernandez' guidance. The punting team finished 4th in the nation in all of FCS in net punting, averaging 39.53 yards per kick. The tight ends also performed well under Fernandez as Chandler Allphin and Anthony Norris combined for 38 catches for 379 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the Thunderbirds offense. The 2013 Thunderbirds earned a spot in the FCS playoffs.

In 2012, as Assistant Linebacker’s coach, Fernandez helped tutor Zak Browning, who led the nation's freshmen in tackles per game and was named the Big Sky Conference's Freshman of the Year and was named a freshman all-American. Fernandez' backers were also a big part of the defense which ranked 1st in the Big Sky and 5th in the nation in turnover differential, was among the nation's best units in the red zone, and also was highly-ranked in sacks.

In 2011, Coach Fernandez worked with a unit that was one of the best pass defenses in the FCS, ranking 19th in the nation against the pass after allowing just 178.2 yards per game through the air. SUU also was outstanding getting to the quarterback in 2011, as the Thunderbirds finished 13th in the FCS in sacks with 2.82 per game.

Coach Fernandez also worked with 2011 Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tyler Osborne, as well as Cody Larsen, a 2011 All-GWC performer and preseason All-American that year.

SUU held opponents to just 1,279 yards on the ground in 2010, the 5th best effort at SUU in an 11-game season as well as the 21st-best mark in the nation. SUU's overall defense also ranked 21st last year after allowing just 3,407 yards. SUU also ranked 24th in the FCS ranks in sacks last season, when it averaged 2.45 per game, and the Thunderbirds' 7.09 tackles for loss in 2010 ranked 25th in the nation.

In 2009, Coach Fernandez begin his coaching career with the Thunderbirds. He was tasked with working along side the DL as the assistant DL coach. Fernandez primarily worked with the Defensive Tackles in SUU’s four down system. He also assisted in the recruiting department, as the assistant recruiting coordinator.

A first-team all-Great West Conference performer at defensive tackle for the Thunderbirds in 2008, coach Fernandez was a three-year letterman for the Thunderbirds. He was among the team's leaders in tackles-for-loss and sacks his last two seasons as well as one of the top two tacklers among defensive linemen both seasons. This earned him Team Defensive MVP.

Coach Fernandez and his wife Heidi are parents to two boys, Kai (9) and Kade (7). Coach Fernandez came to SUU after one season at Mesa Community College, where in 2005 he earned first-team All-NJCAA Region I recognition. He was also a high school All-American and Selected to the Arizona All-State Team three times at Red Mountain HS in his hometown of Mesa, Ariz.Â

Coach Fernandez came to SUU after one season at Mesa Community College, where in 2005 he earned first-team All-NJCAA Region I recognition. He was also a high school All-American and Selected to the Arizona All-State Team three times at Red Mountain HS in his hometown of Mesa, Ariz.Â
