NCAA Infractions
On December 15, 2017, a hearing panel of the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions found that Nine members of the Northern Colorado men’s basketball staff, including the former head coach, were directly involved in the violations, which included completing coursework for prospects, paying for classes the prospects needed to become academically eligible and arranging off-campus practice sessions with an academically ineligible student-athlete. The panel also found that three of the former men’s basketball staff members failed to cooperate in the investigation or provided false and misleading information.
The panel accepted the University’s self-imposed penalties, including its withdrawal from postseason contention for the 2016-17 season, recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions. The panel added a three-year probationary period and a fine of returning all of its money from its appearance in the 2011 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, as well as the requirement that the University vacate prior contests in which men’s basketball student-athletes participated while ineligible. In addition to the penalties, Northern Colorado is under a three-year probation from Dec. 15, 2017, to Dec. 14, 2020. The panel also prescribed a show a six-year show cause for the former head coach, a five-year show cause for two of the former assistants, a four-year show cause for another former assistant and a three-year show cause to three other former assistant coaches.
The panel commended the University for exemplary cooperation "exceeded expectations" and "set an example for all member institutions in its handling of this case,” during the investigation process that began after the University self-reported the incidence in April 2016.
