Offers, Inducements and Extra Benefits From a Booster
An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a UNC employee or representative of athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's representative, friend, or family with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.
Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to UNC's students or their relatives, friends, or to a particular segment of the student body determined on a basis unrelated to athletics activity.
Student-athletes, prospects, their families, friends, or their coaches are not permitted to accept anything not expressly authorized by the NCAA. They are entitled only to those benefits provided for every person within any given context such as other UNC students.
Student-athletes, prospects, their families, friends, or high school/two-year college coaches may not accept the following:
- admission or tickets to any event (sports, movies, concerts, etc.)
- awards (all awards must be distributed through the UNC Department of Athletics)
- camp admission (sports, educational, etc.)
- cash (co-signing loans, insurance, etc.)
- discounts (on merchandise or service)
- educational expenses (registration, supplies, books, graduate work, etc.)
- employment (of prospects, family, or friends)
- entertainment/recreation of any kind, including equipment
- gifts (clothing, jewelry, electronics, etc)
- lodging (rent, home, hotel, etc)
- phone service (cell phones, phone cards, long distance access etc)
- services (car washes, haircuts, etc.)
- transportation (rides, use of vehicles, rentals, gas, air or bus fares, etc.)
Currently, enrolled student-athletes may accept some benefits from representatives of athletics interests, but the benefits must be cleared with the coaching staff for that sport prior to the activity. Student-athletes must never be approached first regarding these benefits. Student-athletes may accept:
- an occasional home meal (home only -- cannot be in a restaurant)
- employment
