GREELEY, Colo. – Men's golf is officially returning to the Big Sky Conference, as announced Thursday by Commissioner Tom Wistrcill. The University of Northern Colorado, the 2023 Big Sky champion, will once again compete for a conference title and NCAA Championship berth beginning in the 2025-26 season.
The Big Sky will resume sponsorship of men's golf after a one-year hiatus, with six teams set to compete: full members Northern Colorado, Idaho, Sacramento State, and Weber State, alongside Eastern Washington, reinstating men's golf as a varsity sport, and new affiliate member Francis Marion.
Northern Colorado has a proud history in Big Sky men's golf, having won the league title in 2023 and earning multiple team and individual honors over the years.
"Excited to get back to The Big Sky," said Director of Golf Clayton Sikorski. "It's a conference tournament we have won multiple times and have a lot of history with. Our guys love competing in it, and we're looking forward to what's ahead."
The return of Big Sky men's golf ensures the conference will maintain its automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship, with the 2026 Big Sky Men's Golf Championship slated for April 27-29 at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona, the same site where the Bears won their most recent title.
"We're thrilled to see Big Sky men's golf return and are proud to be part of its future," said UNC Director of Athletics Darren Dunn. "We are very appreciative of the Summit League supporting our program for one year, but the Big Sky is our home. We have had success in this conference and look forward to competing in the Big Sky Championship in 2026."
The Big Sky most recently sponsored men's golf from 2015 through 2024, with three different teams winning the last three titles: Weber State (2022), Northern Colorado (2023), and Sacramento State (2024). The conference has crowned 39 men's golf champions since its inaugural championship in 1964.
Francis Marion, based in Florence, South Carolina, joins the Big Sky as an affiliate member after competing in the Southland Conference from 2021 to 2025. Eastern Washington will reinstate its men's golf program after last sponsoring it in 2001-02.
