Alirez Earns Southern Scuffle’s Most Valuable Wrestler honor and earned the Most Pins Award
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – New year, new milestones.
Junior and Greeley native Andrew Alirez defeated Allan Hart (Missouri) 8-4 and captured the Southern Scuffle's 141 championship. Alirez's win represents the program's first individual championship at the Southern Scuffle, which is one of the premier wrestling meets in the country.
Alirez secured the Southern Scuffle's Most Valuable Wrestler honor and earned the Most Pins Award.
To advance to the 141 final, Alirez pinned Darren Milner (Bucknell) in the Monday morning semi-final.
As a team the Bears totaled 68.5 points and placed sixth out of 21 teams.
Andrew Berreysea defeated Jared Krattiger (Minnesota) and placed fifth at 174. Stevo Poulin dropped a razor-thin 5-4 decision to Caleb Smith (Appalachian State) and finished sixth at 125. Vinny Zerban placed eighth at 157 due to a medical forfeiture.
ACCORDING TO COACH NICKERSON
"Our team had a satisfactory performance this weekend. Obviously, getting our first Southern Scuffle champion was huge. Andrew is on a different level right now and all four of our placers looked good. Really happy for Andy Berreyesa and he took that next step this weekend. Stevo will take those next steps to be elite. It would have been good to see how Vinny Zerban would have finished, however a small injury prevented that."
