Mountain West foes Air Force and San Jose State headline non-conference home slate
GREELEY, Colo.—Headlined by three teams that participated in March Madness a year ago, Northern Colorado men's basketball coach Steve Smiley announced the team's non-conference schedule on Wednesday.
Starting off against an Elite 8 program from a year ago, the Bears travel to face the University of Houston on November 7 for the team's season opener. In addition to Houston, the defending AAC champions, UNC will play NCAA Tournament teams Baylor and Colorado State.
Runner-ups in the Big 12 and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tourney a year ago, Baylor is set to host UNC on November 14 in Waco, Texas. Colorado State, meanwhile, went 25-5 last season and earned a No. 6 seed in the national championships.
Overall, the Bears will play 12 non-conference dates with two in neutral locations and four inside the Bank of Colorado Arena. The Bears will host Texas A&M-Commerce on November 11 for their home opener while also welcoming San Jose State, Colorado Christian, and Air Force Academy to #TheBank.
Texas A&M-Commerce is in its first season as an NCAA DI program after transition from the Lone Star Conference. The Lions went 17-9 a year ago and qualified for their ninth NCAA DII National Tournament.
San Jose State will be the first of four teams on the UNC schedule from the Mountain West Conference. Culminating with a November 27 clash with the University of New Mexico at The Pit, the Bears will play three games as part of the Lobo Classic. UNC will also play Jacksonville State and North Dakota State in Albuquerque.
Closing out the non-conference schedule will be contests versus in-state rivals Colorado and Air Force. The Bears are scheduled to play at the University of Colorado on December 18 before welcoming Air Force to Greeley on December 20.
UNC men's basketball tickets start at just $99 for adults, $40 for youth as members of Klawz' Cub Club and $199 for a family four pack (two adult, two youth) and are available via the UNC Athletics app, online at UNCBears.com/tickets or by calling (970) 351-4849 or visiting the Ticket Office in Campus Commons from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
