A year after qualifying, Brody Lewis prepares for Olympic Trials

Every four years (clears throat… or five), the best athletes around the world gear up for arguably the most meaningful competition of their careers. But before they can don their country's colors in the opening ceremonies, they must grind through the Olympic Trials.
In swimming, a coveted ticket to Omaha in June is the one invitation every swimmer dreams of. Phelps, Dressel, Ledecky, Franklin and Torres are just a few of the epic list of USA Swimming titans that have made their way to Nebraska and on to Olympic Glory.
This year, Northern Colorado's own Brody Lewis will represent UNC and the city he grew up in at what is widely considered the fastest meet in the world.
"I am super excited to finish my swimming career at such a high-level meet," said Lewis. "I am grateful to represent UNC and the City of Greeley at the Olympic Trials."
Prior to becoming the Bears' enigmatic assistant coach, Lewis was busy carving out a prolific career at the University of Utah. Amongst his numerous accolades, which include owning the fourth-fastest 200 breast time in Ute history, the fifth-fastest 100 breast time and four consecutive trips to the Pac-12 Championships, the Greeley, Colorado native saved his best for last.
In 2020, a determined Lewis hit Olympic qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. However, pure jubilation turned into tortured patience as the world watched the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and thus the trials, pushed to 2021 in the wake of a global pandemic.
While Lewis and the rest of the swimming world were forced to sit on the sidelines, he turned his attention to guiding Northern Colorado to one of its best seasons in program history.
All the while, in between practices, workouts and meetings, Brody kept training. It shouldn't be surprising Greeley's hometown hero, the 5A State Champion, Scholastic All-American and Dr. Chris Hill Leadership Award Winner has found a way to juggle it all.
This week, Lewis rightfully earns his moment in the spotlight.
"I hope I can inspire a few young swimmers in our community to set new goals and see what the Greeley swimming community can do at a national level," Lewis said.
Lewis kicks off his trials in the 100 breast on Saturday, June 5, while the 200 breast is slated for the final day of Wildcard Weekend on Monday, June 7.
Prelims begin each morning at 10 a.m. CDT with the finals later in the evening at 7 p.m.
"The people, teammates and coaches that I've had growing up in Greeley have been monumental supporters of me," explained Lewis. "I want them to know that I am forever thankful for all they've done and will continue to do for our incredible community."
