UNC cross country competed in its long event of the 2020-21 season
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado cross country competed in its lone competition of the 2020-21 season at the Big Sky Championships in Ogden, Utah. For their only competition of the year, the Bears had some strong performances.
Fresh off setting the indoor track and field program's record for the 800m, Jesse Hayward paced the UNC men finishing the snowy 8k course with a time of 27:26.4. Teammate Timothy Chambers was just 23 seconds behind him with a time of 27:49.9.
Melodie Leroudier was the top Bear on the women's side finishing in 25th place. The California native crossed the line on the 5k course in 18:30.9. Julia Brown and Alison Zigler were the only other two Bears to compete on the women's side. They finished with times of 20:09.4 and 21:15.8, respectively.
What They Said
Assistant Track and Field & Cross Country Coach Stormie Sickler
"It was a snowy course, fortunately, we didn't get as much as they had anticipated. The women had snow during their race and men had more sun. Both teams finished last as we took a blow by COVID and we were unable to bring an entire women's rosters. On the men's side, we battled guys running that were battling injuries and who have not been primarily training for the 8k, but instead their respective events for track & field. Overall, I was pleased with their performances, we got out hard and had some fun competing being this was the first Big Sky Championship for track/xc since the last indoor track and field season one year ago. We are focusing hard on outdoor track and field and eager to get back on the track for racing!"
