Wrestling Caps Off Strong Opening Day with Win Over Utah Valley

Northern Colorado went 4-0 to open the 2021-22 season
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Wrestling went a perfect 4-0 to open the 2021-22 season capping it off with a 19-15 Big 12 win over Utah Valley. The Bears hosted Northwest Kansas Tech, North Idaho, and Doane alongside UVU.
After three dominant wins to start the day, the top of Northern Colorado's set the tone for the dual against the Wolverines jumping out to a 13-0 lead. Jace Koelzer, Mosha Schwartz and Chris Sandoval each won by decision with Andrew Alirez picking up the extra point with a major decision.
Schwartz and Alirez took on fellow ranked opponents in Haiden Dury and Ty Smith, respectively.
Alirez picked up a four-point near fall in the final minute of his match to earn the extra point for the Bears.
Utah Valley closed the gap to 13-8 when Nick Knutson capped off a strong day at 174 lbs. The graduate student moved up a weight class after earning two falls and a tech fall earlier in the day. A pair of reversals separated him from Kekana Fouret of UVU as he earned 2:20 of riding time for a 9-5 decision pushing the Bears closer to victory.
Alan Clothier earned the match-clinching points with a gutty performance in the 197 lbs bout. Down 3-1 in the second period to Evan Bockman he evened the match at three with a takedown inside the final minute of the second period.
Choosing down to start the third period Clothier got the quick escape he needed to go up 4-3 and hold on to the extra point for riding time in a 5-3 victory.
UNC won its other three matches of the day 52-4 over Northwest Kansas Tech, 46-3 against North Idaho and 31-13 over Doane. The Bears combined for eight falls and four tech falls in the duals. The quickest pin of the day belonged to Andrew Alirez at 24 seconds against North Idaho.
