Three Wrestlers Grab Scholar All-American Awards

Jacob Seely, Alan Clothier and Jace Koelzer named NWCA Scholar All-Americans
MANHEIM, Penn.- Northern Colorado wrestling matched the program record with three student-athletes earning Scholar All-American awards from the National Coaches Wrestling Association. Jacob Seely, Alan Clothier and Jace Koelzer all earned All-American status after outstanding years on and off the mat.
To qualify for the NWCA All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule and must have competed in at least 60 percent of the schedule.
"We are really proud to have three guys on the Academic All-American team," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "This ties the most we have had and goes to show that the hard work our student-athletes are putting in is paying off."
Seely earns his third NWCA Scholar All-American award after qualifying for this third consecutive NCAA Championships. Seely distinguished himself as one of four wrestlers in the Big 12 with a 4.0 GPA and placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships to automatically qualify for the NCAAs. The Grand Junction, Colo. native posted an 18-9 overall record. Seely has already completed his bachelor's degree and is working on his master's degree in Social Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.
"Jacob has consistently been a great student-athlete and is really excelling in his graduate school program," Nickerson said of Seely. "We are proud of his third Scholar All American honor."
Clothier earns his first NWCA Scholar All-American spot after automatically qualifying for his second NCAA Championships. The Lawrence, Kan. native placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships and led the team with 26 wins during the season. Clothier is currently working on his degree in Human Services.
Koelzer grabs his first Scholar All-American award after earning the starting spot at 125 lbs during his redshirt-freshman season. The Olathe, Kan. native finished with a 16-7 overall record, going 7-3 in dual matches. Koelzer is currently pursuing his degree Psychology.
"For Alan and Jace, they are both more than deserving," Nickerson said. "We are excited to have them both pick up their first of multiple Scholar All-American achievements."
With three in 2020, head coach Troy Nickerson's program has now produced 11 NWCA Scholar All-Americans during his tenure.
