Swim and Dive Continues Strong WAC Championship Despite Changes

UNC swimming and diving posts a pair of NIC qualifiers
HOUSTON – A water main break on the campus of the University of Houston has changed up the schedule for the 2020 WAC Championship. The championship now does not have prelims in the morning then finals at night, but just one session that counts as the finals. The break happened on Thursday canceling the finals and forcing the change for both Friday and Saturday.
Despite the change in format, UNC swimming and diving continues to put together a strong championship. The Bears 200 free relay and 400 medley relay teams posted NICA qualifying times while many personal best times have been recorded.
Maddy Moore, Petra Kis, AJ Popp and Emily Hamel made up the 200 free relay that qualified for the National Invitational Championship with a swim of 1:31.11. Moore and Hamel were also on the 400 medley relay that touched the wall in 3:47.01. Maria Heymans and Hallie Peterson completed the 400 medley team.
Kis was not only on the NICA qualifying 200 free relay, but won the 400 IM. The junior won the race with a time of 4:18.63. She took sixth place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.91.
Teammate Paula Nunez finished in sixth place in the 400 IM touching the wall at 4:27.72.
Moore had a pair of individual top five finishes in the 50 free and 100 back. She claimed silver for the 50 free checking in at 22.95. In the 100 back, Moore swam a 55.42 to finish fourth.
Hamel finished just behind Moore in the 50 free at 23.03.
Heymans earned a top five finish by claiming fourth in the 100 breast. Heymans finished the race with a time of 1:02.66.
On the diving board, Keeley Coffee finished 16th on the 3 meter with a score of 163.70.
